Integrated Transport - Instant Delivery
To pursue the analogy, during the twentieth century it may be thought that we were stumbling in the dark, seeking but never finding the solution to the problems of transport, but always believing that the ideal is integrated, or co-ordinated, transport – whatever that is.

Experiments in Public Transport operation - Printed Book

Price per Unit (piece): £11.95

This book falls into four parts.  First, my background interest in public transport.  Secondly, the experiments in which I was personally involved, which necessarily included innovative vehicle forms as an integral part of the experimental operations.  Thirdly, the sections on postbuses, demand-responsive transport, and recent road and rail experiments.  The emphasis is on public transport operation i.e the services (the software).  There is no direct concern with experimental buses, trams or trains – the vehicles used to provide the services (the hardware) – except insofar as some infrastructure and vehicles are necessarily innovative in order to carry out the operational experiments.  Having said which, there is more general interest in experimental vehicles than experimental services.

I must emphasise that these are just examples, and this is not a comprehensive review of all unconventional or innovative experiments.  Readers will want to follow up examples that interest them with their own research.

Finally, my usual disclaimer concerning technicalities.  I am not an engineer or an economist, and my descriptions of the experimental vehicles in the third part of the book are those of an interested observer.  My comments on the ways of utilising conventional and experimental vehicles are based more on professional expertise.  They are offered in the hope that they will stir the memories of older readers and stimulate younger ones to think about what experiments need to be conducted to advance the provision of public transport in the future.
